Curriculum

The range of activities and opportunities we provide both in lesson time and through extra-curricular activities, coupled with the provision of support & guidance, underpins our work towards ensuring that every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, has the support they need to be successful.

Children are provided with all resources and equipment they require during the school day. There is no need to send in anything from home ie pencil cases and toys.

Key Stage 2

The National Curriculum programmes of study and attainment targets form the basis of our curriculum content.  We deliver a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum enhanced with visits, visitors and residential visits.

Pupils take ownership of their learning through opportunities provided during each topic, as well as assessing their own progress throughout their work.

Homework

It is our belief that the most effective use of homework is where it supports the development of a positive attitude to self-directed study and the re-enforcement of key knowedge.  As a result, homework at Signhills comprises of tasks that will re-enforce classroom learning.

Our Curriculum Intents

Whole School Curriculum Intent

At Signhills Academy, we pride ourselves on offering a holistic curriculum that secures exceptional attainment and/or progress while ensuring children are ‘Secondary Ready’.   Children strive to ensure that they leave Signhills organised and responsible young people who are able to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.  By the end of Key Stage 2, children value learning and have adopted learning habits that enable them to become life-long learners.

We endeavour to provide our children with a wide range of experiences that develop them into well-rounded, confident and active citizens; with the skills and knowledge of how to keep themselves safe in various contexts within today’s digital era.

We aim to provide our pupils with both a broad and deep knowledge of the National Curriculum, with the ability to relate it to the world around them.  With this knowledge, pupils are equipped to make meaningful contributions and recognise their place within the world in which they live.

Curriculum Implementation

The curriculum at Signhills builds on an age-appropriate understanding of the wider world.  Our youngest children are encouraged to apply their knowledge to the local and immediate environment.  As children move through the academy, they are challenged to assimilate their new learning in a much wider context so that by the end of Key Stage 2 they are global citizens.

To ensure children acquire and develop knowledge and skills which builds on previous learning, golden threads run through our non-core curriculum subjects. These golden threads are fundamental areas of learning and must be covered in the delivery of each curriculum area. They link prior learning with the future.
